MS Word 2003 single lines

You may think that this is rudimentary but I have tried every which way to get Word to make a single line but it makes a double one evertime I press enter.
Advice needed,

Format > Paragraph > Indents and Spacing > Spacing > Line Spacing
Choose single and have 0 pts before and after. Remember to clear any other styles, formatting & autoformatting.

Thanks but I failed again! When I removed formatting whole doc disappeared so I had to undo!

Thanks I have now got single lines and of course it was easy after I had done exactly the same as before!!
