I agree. I'm a huge Apple fan but that's based on my awe and wonder at how they follow the design process through to the nth degree. No bells, no whistles -- just simple beauty in functionality which, for me, is what good design is all about (although the current problem iPhone 4 owners are having getting it to, er, work do make me chuckle).

That doesn't stop feeling an intense irritation at this whole 'toys for the boys' thing. I bought the iPhone when it first came out. I didn't have an iPod and wanted music on the move, with a phone that could link to my Mac. It replaced my old ?20 Nokia (which I still think is a design classic) but I won't be replacing it any time soon. I don't need it to do anything more than it does already and I'm not at all vexed that I can't upgrade to the new iPhone operating system because it's now such a relic.

The thing that really gets me is that so many people fork out a fortune on total and utter shite. Aside from the whole phone thing, can someone please tell me why everybody went out and bought a flat-screen television to replace their old CRT TV long before HD was being transmitted? Did anyone actually notice how shite the transmission image was compared to the old CRT screen? I'm not even convinced by HD from the few occasions I've watched it (I still watch telly on my old CRT). It's too sharp. It's not normal. My natural vision is not as sharp as HD.

And don't get me onto 3D. How fucking stupid and crap is that?! I just doesn't work. It's just layers and layers of flatness, not like normal three-dimensional vision at all.

We live in strangely stupid times. I'm off to read a book. That I can hold in my hands.

Sadly, evolution such as iPhone 4 and 3D TV underpins "growth" in the economy. As we are all led to believe, growth = good.....

Marketing bods are experts at creating a desire for things we really don't need, and being sheep we usually go along with it. There's an element of "compensatory consumption" in there, too (ie buying these things makes up for some other negative aspect of our lives). Sadly, some people genuinely see mobile phones (even the basic ones mentioned above) as a "need", not a "want". Fuck knows how we lived for the past thousands of years without them.

Another good example of this could be cars: less than ?10k would get a reasonable (and brand new) car which would perfectly serve it's purpose of transporting up to 4/5 people from A to B. However, for various reasons, people want/feel they need, say a ?45k 4x4 and (presumably) believe this brings c?35k of benefit to them over and above the bog-standard alternative.

We live in a world where if someone is willing to pay ?825 for the new iPhone then that is indeed what it is worth.

I don't understand it all. I need a phone that you can make calls on and send texts. I own a very basic Nokia (cost me about ?30) which does everything I want it to - in fact it is my 3rd handset in 11 years of mobile ownership.

Or maybe I'm just behind the times.

As a Mac user I was happy when my then contract ended so that I could change my Blackberry, which wouldn't sync with my computer, for the 3G iPhone.

Within a few days the iPhone had been returned and I was back to using the BB. Apple may be great "stylists" when it comes to design, but without "substance" (ie the ability to send bulk texts to a group, a battery that lasts more than half a day, bluetooth connectivity that actually works so you don't miss calls when driving, for example) they are nothing.

The fact that this new "highly engineered" bit of kit won't receive calls properly if you hold it like a phone http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8761240.stm just goes to show that as far as Apple are concerned style is more important than substance.

As I've said elsewhere (Mac Forums for one), I suppose that's what we should expect from a company that started making computers but now makes mobile juke boxes... what do they know about phones?????

iPhone 4 vs HTC Evo:

I think it portrays a lot of iPhone fans pretty well.

It has a gorgeous screen and a decent processor. Apart from that it's a complete bag of wank that only a moron would want.

Oh, and Apple's fix for their antenna issue? Make the signal bars on the screen look bigger so it just looks like you've a decent signal! !laugh! @apple.

Apparently Steve Jobs says there's no problem and it's all made up by the press.....yet Apple are reportedly giving away cases which solve the issue.

For anyone who's not being following it all, and thinking of getting a iPhone 4, the 'revolutionary' antenna on the iPhone 4 is along the bottom-left side of the phone.....the outside of the phone. Being on the outside it gets a better signal (like our old phone's used to when we had antenna's we pulled out of the phone). Well, when anything conductive touches this antenna....like....err...your skin, it shorts out and you lose signal. How this passed something Apple prides itself on, that being quality control, I have no idea. It's rather funny, though.....if you're not the owner of an iPhone 4.

Apple's earlier 'fix' was to advise people to cover the antenna area with a piece of duct tape, to prevent your skin shorting out the antenna. That's right: duct tape, on a ?500 phone. Or you can spend ?30 on an official case which covers it up. A case specifically designed for the iPhone and made by Apple, when Apple have always left the design and making of iPhone cases to other companies. Hmmmmm..... So the only iPhone they've ever made a case for is the iPhone that just happens to need a case for it to work competently. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
