Ah yes, non-doms, hardly a surprising development, given the Tory party was more or less prevented from collapsing by non-dom Lord Ashcroft of Belize a few years back.
It took Ashcroft about 10 years of questioning before he finally announced that he would actually give up his non-dom status. William Hague was made to look a right stupid tosser (not difficult I know) after he wrote in Ashcroft's support in 2000 in the belief that he would give up his non-dom status straightaway.
If you lived in a marginal as I did, you would have been inundated by glossy brochures supporting the Tory candidate. For every one Labour leaflet I received about 20 full colour leaflets. All paid for by, yes, you know who. Funded by tax avoidance, based in Belize.
The Labour party has non-doms but no way is the party funded by tax avoidance to the extent the Tory party is riddled with it.
There should be a simple rule for tax avoiding non-doms - no title, no seat in the Lords - no donations - end off.
And as for the three Tory peers including former Tory party treasurer, Lord Mcalpine, they should be hanging their heads in shame. They took the House of Lords expenses for years, they vote for the laws of the land and then when they are forced to make more of a contribution to this country and give up their tax avoiding ways, they head for the hills. Contemptible!
The Lib Dems are hardly squeaky clean either on this given one of their biggest donors in recent times (?2.4 million) is a convicted fraudster.
Its the new politics don't you know, one of fairness and working together.
Makes me want to vomit.
Cheers

Interesting that you quote the content of a blog by Iain Dale, who stood as a Conservative candidate at the last election, was chief of staff for David Davis and writes for the Daily Telegraph.
Now there are some who would call you politically naive for swallowing whole the thoughts of someone with his track record. However, I couldnt possibly comment.
What can't be denied is that Ashcroft alone has donated approximately 7 million to the Tories, most of it at a time when the party was close to collapse financially.
If you add that to the fact that 64% of the Labour Party's donations last year were from trade unions, my statement is correct. The Labour party has had funding from non doms but the party has never been in the situation where it has been as dependent on a non-doms support as the Tories were previously on Ashcrofts.

But if Lord Ashcroft pays tax on his earnings in Belize which I believe he does, why should he have to pay again because he lives in England?
Tax avoidance is any case legal, tax evasion is not and Michael Ashcroft has never been accused of that.

"Tax avoidance is any case legal, tax evasion is not"
I know.
You may have come across the concept of morality.
Is it moral for someone to prop up the Tory party and save it from bankruptcy, become a peer by misleading the senior Tory MPs that supported his case, vote in the House of Lords on tax laws in this country, organise the campaign in the marginals and yet be unwilling to make any tax contribution to the country apart from the minimum?
It stinks

Would you object if he had been propping up the Labour Party or Liberals?
You might ask is it moral for Labour MPs in Scotland to vote on healthcare and education policies in England that do not affect their own constituencies.

Yes and said as much in another thread i.e. if you are a non dom, no peerage, no place in the Lords, end of.
Nor do I think non doms should be supporting the Labour party or Lib Dems.

Okay - but what about the point that if you pay tax in one country why should you have to pay it again in a second country?
