Can the government ever win?....

...or is their job like pushing piss up a hill?
For example, some want minimal government and don't want the "nanny state" to interfere with their lives, often the very same people to complain when something goes wrong (usually something adversely affecting them) who respond with "and why the fuck has the government not prevented this/helped me out".
This is one of my pet peeves. Am I just a cynical young bastard?

porn historian is right, but on top of that politicians ALWAYS let their ideology get in the way of what's best for the country.
Take the coalition. They are going much further than necessary with their cuts programme because it's the Tory party ideology to slash and burn and the Lib Dems are so delighted to be in a job they're going along with it. For now.
It makes no sense to destroy the existing schools rebuilding plans but at the same time fund free schools. That's Tory ideology at work.
It makes no sense to reconstruct the NHS the way the Tories are doing, but their ideology is running wild here. Giving doctors control of their budgets and taking away the managers sounds fine in principle, but doctors my not make good managers, so you run the risk of a less efficient service, or surgeries hiring managers to take care of the business anyway.
Labour are just as bad with their big government ideology.

I wasn't thinking in terms of ideology, along party lines or specific policy decisions. Just more general non-parisan stuff, such as:
1) "Yeah, I know it was private greed on both the bankers and borrowers part that gave rise to the whole banking mess, BUT WHY HAVEN'T THE GOVERNMENT FULLY GUARANTEED MY SAVINGS AND SORTED OUT THIS WHOLE MESS YET?" (Particularly annoying when it comes from those who pretty much want to have sex with the "free-market")
2) "I bought a house on a well-know flood plain. As Mother Nature would have it, a few years later my house flooded. BUT WHY THE FUCK IS THE GOVERNMENT NOT RESOLVING THIS ISSUE FOR ME WITHIN 48 HOURS?" (Particularly annoying from people who hate publicly-owned/supported housing).
3) "I can't believe that baby was physically abused by her parents....WHAT THE FUCK WERE THE GOVERNMENT DOING? WHY DIDN'T THEY SORT IT OUT? (ie completely ignoring the real two evil people in such sorry episodes, and acting almost as if the government kinda wanted the baby to come to harm).
4) The BP disaster is a real life, recent example too. Why are people so annoyed at Barack Obama? Has he been exposed as oil drilling militant saboteur or something? Or is he just an easy target to vent frustration at? If a multi-million dollar CEO of an MNC which specialises in oil drilling, with all the billions at his disposal and a share price crash motivating a quick resolution cannot resolve the disaster sharpish, WTF do people think Obama should be able to?.
Sorry for venting my spleen. I'm a bit like pringles when I get going on a pet peeve....

I think one commentator summed up the voter attitude perfectly when he said the population wanted Scandinavian style social services with US style taxation.

Listening to Radio5Live this morning they had an interview with someone who is on holiday in Turkey and a customer of the collpased tour operator Goldtrail.
Person was complaining that the hotel wanted her to pay the bill (which is wrong) and she couldnt - but she wanted the British Government to send a plane and fly her home !
She then went onto complain about having to pay for medical treatment for an accident (she was quoted ?400) and said she couldnt afford that and would wait till she got home and get it on the NHS, when the interviewer asked if she had a European Health Insurance Card she said no.
So we have people who moan about how much HMG costs and want everything done as cheaply as possible, until THEY need help !

Yeah, that's the stuff I mean - neatly summed up by Antoni's "we have people who moan about how much HMG costs and want everything done as cheaply as possible, until THEY need help".
"Government" is too readily becoming a great catch-all for ignorant, anger-filled arseholes who just want something or someone to lash out at. Grow up, and take some responsibility.
