European athletics championships

Hi

After the usual four yearly disappointment of watching England in the World Cup and getting the almost inevitable answer of no to the question is it Andy Murrays' year at Wimbledon, it has been a real treat so far to watch the athletics.

Somali refugee, Mo Farah wins a gold medal on the track for Britain and Chris Stephenson comes second. Both of them show a child-like happiness at winning medals.

Jess Ennis, daughter of a mixed marriage is doing great so far in the heptathlon and the guys of African Caribbean descent like Christian Malcolm, Mark Lewis-Francis have been doing great in the sprints.

And as for Andy Turner who lost his lottery funding two years ago, the smile on his face at winning a gold medal in the high hurdles was priceless compared to the moans of the footballers, bored at life in their base in South Africa.

I am sure all posters will join me in congratulating the team as a wonderful example of multiculturalism in action.

Err, won't you?

Cheers

Regarding childless happiness about winning medals - the biscuit would be taken by that Russian woman about winning bronze in the shot put...

Yeah, I remember one of the sprint finals when there were two black French girls second and third, I think. They were making so much noise, whooping, screaming and hollering whilst doing standing jumps with their knees up at about head height, Steve Cram who was doing the commentary was in fits of laughter as he was drowned out by their noise.

I know there is a doping problem still in athletics but when you see people reacting like that at getting a silver and bronze medal which I would guess would bring little financial reward other than funding to carry on training full-time, it kinda gives me a warm feeling.

Its a world apart from the greedy football Premier League with its 100K a week salaries and all the better for that, I think.

Cheers
