Lets hope GCHQ are a bit more on the ball than Lancashire police when it comes to cracking Osama's passwords. I suspect the law was introduced back in 2006 to be used irrespective of whether or not the authorities could break the encryption.

I imagine there are people in GCHQ having a quiet snigger at this....

The encyption he used is secure at the moment and cannot be broken by a computer (it any meaningful time).........you could pass it onto NSA and you still wouldnt get anywhere.

There was a report a few months ago, where the FBI had aquired a druglords laptop but after 6 months they also couldnt break the encryption used, so they couldnt prosecute him.

You called this guy a paedophile, mrmcfister. According to that article he's only been convicted of failing to disclose an encryption key.

He also said he couldn`t remember the 50 character password which is well within the realms of possibility. I dunno this sorta thing scares me. If they had a case against him then they shouldn`t need to access his hard drive.
This could just be a teenager with some dodgy porn or shit he doesn`t want seen and his privacy violated. He could be going down because he doesn`t want his dad knowing he likes to google huge black cocks

Not being able to remember/ recall the code is not the same as witholding it. I suppose that would have been his defence and it wasn't believed - the jury must have tended to the view that it was recorded somewhere and it was being witheld.

You have to wonder how reliable the tip-off was that the Police received that resulted in the lad's questioning and arrest. Did it result in other arrests, was there more and better evidence, was Drage implicated by other evidence ? We don't know .. on one hand maybe he was and he knows there's little prospect of the Police breaking the code so he'll take a much lesser charge and sentence and be relieved, or, there is no evidence implicating Drage, the Police don't wish to appear like they've acted in haste and they'll flex their muscles and get some publicity for a little known offence.

Anyone who's seen my computer fuck-ups would know I don't know what I'm talking about but...

Surely the password hurdle is only there to stop people causally accessing your data via normal use. If the cops wanted to study his hard drive they could simply remove it and analyse it. Also, the IT guys where I work can get around passwords vis some 'backdoor method' on computers left behind when employees leave. The cops must have this ability too.

It sounds like the kid is being punished for simply not cooperating with plod rather than wrecking the whole investigation.
