To be fair to the French soldiers facing the German blitzkrieg of may 1940, in 45 days they suffered between 95000 and 120000 killed in action. I would say that shows some resolve. They were let down by their commanders and the rather old fashioned military doctrine, mostly in the armoured field, they fought under.

I am not sure what the purpose of this post is. Is it to satirise those French people who go on strike? Or is it to vilify the hundreds of thousands of French people who died in World War II?

If you read the table of World War II deaths in the following link you will see that over 200,000 military Frenchmen lost their lives and as a proportion of their population, the French lost a higher percentage than the UK.

Well how would you feel Dick, if one of your relatives in the French army or Resistance had given their lives and someone made a cheap joke at their expense?

None of my relatives are French so that particular circumstance is purely hypothetical,therefore I cannot answer your question. So I stand by my comment.

So you stand by your comment despite an horrendous casualty list that showed the French had resolve until it was futile sacrificing yet more lives?

I know far more than you regarding the French and WWII for a start, as it seems do many others here.

So in the light of your comment on the Margaret Thatcher flu thread, can we assume one of your relatives is in fact Margaret Thatcher? Otherwise how could you possibly empathise?
