Anyone on here had problems playing DVDs from America (ie region 1 discs) or elsewhere on a mutil-region player?

And this isn't a potentially very frustrating porn problem - I recently purchased the 2-disc dvd of Pulp Fiction in America but the fucker won't play on my cheap as chips ?99 Cyber Home player.

I've looked about on the net but all the 'hackers' seem to refer to is making a standard dvd player into a multi-region one by fiddling about with codes.

Any ideas anyone? Or has my attempt at getting a bargain dvd in America ($16 compared to ?20+ when Pulp Fiction's released here) backfired?

Perhaps the problem is not region coding but the fact that American DVDs will be NTSC (rather than PAL) as well as region 1. Does your set up play American Region 0 DVDs OK?

Yes, it played an American Region 0 dvd with no problems at all. (presumably American region 0 discs are NTSC?)

I did read recently of American dvd producers intorducing something called Regional Code Enhancement (RCE) so they can carry on making money with staggered releases around the world.

I think a call to the manufacturers will have to be my next step.

i had a similar problem with my phillips dvd.went to richer sounds got an awai dvd with a multi region chip upgrade now plays all regions without having to enter any codes.

RCE has been introduced by a lot of major studios and can cause a problem for some multi region machines in the UK. Basically, an RCE encoded disc has its region code read by the DVD player before the disc which actually start spinning. This will cause a problem for some players which automaically switch regional codes when a disc is inserted, as the disc realises the machine isn?t a native region 1 player and stops working. Most of the better chips/modifications now work around this and you can actually manually programme your machine for a certain region before playing a disc - Hope I haven?t been to confusing!! People like Tektronics sell budget to top-end players which will play anything you throw at them.

Is this first Region 1 disc you have ever tried on
your player?

If it is it's possible your player is still set
for region 2 only (uk) and needs some code put in
via the remote control to make it multiregional.

Do you know anybody else with a multiregion player
who could try out the discs just to confirm that
the discs are actually ok ?
