It's a mixed bag.

Some of the under the hood improvements are great, yet they've left out some simple, but necessary things needed by the big production houses.

Overall, it's more like an update to imovie than FCP, indeed, as it stands, it's a roll-back to FCP4 days.

They say it's a work in progress, and new things will be added soon, but soon needs to be very soon, otherwise it'll be judged on its first impressions, which are good for the big production houses.

Having said that, it does all I currently need it to, so i'll be using it.

They should have waited longer and got the updates in on launch, although it's rumoured the bean counters wanted an early launch to get the money in on this years books, not next years.

I'll be definately getting it, but not right in the middle of editing a pile of stuff, which would be asking for disaster.

Ideally, I think it works best on the new Macbook Pro Quad cores which support Hyperthreading. Unfortunately, mine are the "Old" dual core Macbooks.

I'm sure it will be a great programme.

Check which ones are supported, you need 256mb and openCL support on your video card for it to work.

Good excuse to buy a new MBP if yours doesn't work, though!

Shop wisely, you can pick up a 13" from ?849, and a 15" from ?1229 from the refurb store. Buy via quidco and shave a further 3% off, too!

Go on, you know you want to.

A quote from the register article, in case anybody is thinking of using it to edit old projects.

"The fact that X won't open projects from FCP 7 is ludicrous"

Unfortunately this is the one I need, for work!

PLUS the 8 gig memory and 2.3Ghz processor, makes it a cool ?2500! All this to save 15-30 minutes on some rendering time. I think, I'll just have another cuppa, a hobnob and file my nails!....... girlfriend!

(Sorry about nicking Gok Wan's favourite expression!!happy!
