slightly off topic...Helen Mirren &...

Some years ago, I saw a vhs copy(in the states, staying with a friend) of the movie "Caligula". I believe that this movie was released as an 18 cert in the uk as I saw it at the cinema, but the vhs copy I saw in the USA was full hard core porno. I think Helen Mirren was in it, although she wasn't in any of the porno scenes. I just wondered if anyone knew where I might be able to get a copy of the hardcore version? It's a great shame that Helen didn't do any h/c scenes, cos she was hot then, nearly twenty years ago & I still wouldn't mind now, if she had 1/2 hr to spare!
I would prefer to get a dvd if poss, but know that this is probably not very likely due to the age of the movie!

Was this the same film that was on TV last night?

Love to see the film un-cut, as its a pain when films are cut.

Yes this was the very same film that was on C5 last night! A Bob Guccione(of Penthouse I think) production! And YES it was HARDCORE! Shame about what we get to see on tv isn't it!?

When one of the Shakespearian actors involved expressed unease at the sight of naked pornstars wandering around on set, John Gielgud is supposed to have told him 'Just keep quiet, dear boy, and take the money.'

As far as I know the film was shot and made as a softcore film. A very expensive one. After principal photography had been completed Guccione then went out and filmed some hardcore scenes (6 minutes) which were then inserted into the film to the utter displeasure of the entire cast I am sure. But someone else may be able to clarify if that is correct or not.

I think the C5 version last night was probably the longest version of the film they could legally show (at 150 minutes) which is longer than the VHS release from about 10 years back which I think was the original UK theatrical release of 105 mins.

The film was made for $20 million making it the most expensive hardcore film ever.

In the very early 1980's I saw pics from the film and thought 'THIS I MUST SEE!!' When the finished product was being edited, censors were appalled at the strong content for its time and major cuts were needed before being released as an X-certificate.
Some of the minor actresses who appeared nude in the film then appeared in Playbirds etc helping to promote the film with spreads that contained the immortal words 'these pics are from the hardcore uncut version of the film'
As a result of promotion from these pics, the star, Malcolm McDowell disassociated himself from the film......but still was happy enough to take royalties.
I did see it in its first month of release and remembered how shit it was after all the hype. Last nights viewing confirmed that view, so I switched to C4 and watched 'Scum' Now THAT is what I call a film!!

EC is correct. The hardcore scenes were filmed seperately and then erm inserted (oo-er sounds a bit rude).
