Just shows how little you know about road cycling, then.
For all the media hype it was always going to be a tough ask, given Mark Cavendish is so lethal from a few hundred metres out. None of the other nations wanted Cav in the leading bunch, so when there were breakaways it was difficult for Team GB to chase them down without the help of other riders.
In events like the Tour de France, Team Sky are made up of a dozen or so riders, and they all get instructions via radio from their team principals in the support cars as to who is where, when to chase down etc. With many riders able to help the main men like Wiggins and Cavendish, the job is relatively easy to get them in the positions they need to be in.
At the Olympics the teams are far smaller so rely on riders of other nations to help out. Furthermore there is no radio communication so it's down to the cyclists themselves to make the decisions. However, knowing what to do and when, and actually implementing the decision is nigh on impossible for the 4 Team GB riders helping to pace Cavendish without other riders also helping to reel in the breakaways. Team GB got no help.
