Andrew Mitchell, the government Chief Whip has resigned over his stream of invective at the Downing Street police.

Took awhile! Mind according to Mitchell, he ddn't swear and he didn't call the police plebs. Not sure why he resigned then.

Apparently he had had a "very frustrating and tiring day". A long lunch at one of the most expensive Indian restaurants in London, followed by an evening at his club.

It's tough at the top, plebs.

Can we now expect to see mass resignations by policemen who have ever told members of the public to 'eff off, or stood by whilst Ian Tomlinson was pushed to his death, or have some serious soul-searching to do about Hillsborough? I'm not holding my breath.

Interesting how this was announced at 6.20pm on a Friday. Done to minimise the news coverage and to make it harder for them to find him for an exclusive interview. If this was announced anytime from a Sunday teatime to a Thursday evening, it would have got much more coverage in the print press the following day, and (with the exception of the Sunday) got much more coverage on that evenings news programmes too. He'll be back in Government in a year's time, or if not Dave and co will find him some very lucrative position somewhere else.

All this cycling nonsense was bound to end in tears.

At least he was not part of all that lycra and crash helmet nonsense, although for a chap, maybe the basket is a bit suspect.

Steady on with the criticism of the Old Bill.

Did the police say they were sorry? Cors they did.

ANd here is another example. The trial of a policeman who told a young black man under arrest, "The problem with you is that you will always be a nigger," has ended with the jury unable to reach a verdict.

PC Alex MacFarlane, 53, a Metropolitan police officer based at Forest Gate in east London, was accused of racially abusing 21-year-old Mauro Demetrio in the back of a police van in August last year. MacFarlane argued that his words were a misguided attempt to turn the young man's life around. "I had formed an impression in my mind that he had low self-esteem," MacFarlane, said. "I wanted him to reconsider his lifestyle"

Mind you in the Macfarlane case an earlier recording made by the bloke arrested, Demetrio features another police officer in the same van calling him a "scumbag" and a "cunt" and boasting about having throttled him.

I agree with Argie that this is a mountain out of a molehill.

However to use the jargon, there is an "underlying narrative" here.

We have Osborne demanding to stay in a first class seat because he couldn't possibly sit in standard class.

We have Oliver Letwin showing his respect for his constituents by putting their private correspondence to him in the rubbish bins in St. James Park.

And to replace Andrew Mitchell who has gone after "Plebgate", we have Sir George Young, the Tory who stated "the homeless are people you step over as you come out of the opera".

Like I say, there is an underlying narrative here which has been pcked up on by a lot more of the population than Labour politicians.

Osborne should travel first class.
