The UK has been misrepresenting meat products for years, check out your local nightlife for mutton dressed as lamb.

I think the real culprits in this fiasco are the supermarkets. They are the ones who have systematically forced down the price of produce to the UK farmer. So much so that if a producer wants to keep what contract they have they will prepare and package the produce. All so that the fat cat bastards can outshout oneanother in the price war. A price war of their making.
Fuckem all I say. Support your local butcher and greengrocer if you have one. If you drive to a supermarket then why not drive a little further and patronise a Farm Shop?
If you don't give a toss then keep on going to a supermarket and carry on making the rich bastard supermarket establishments richer.

Back to being serious the real issue is that the food chain is far too convoluted. This was highlighted by the foot and mouth outbreak back in 2001 when live animals were being transported from the north of England to Kent for slaughter yet nothing has changed.

The long term outcome of this scandal ought to be cutting the steps from farm to end product to retailer to a minimum so also minimising the opportunities for malpractice.

Couldn't agree more. It's outsourcing gone mad across third party companies, dealers, traders, countries etc. The result is that it seems really difficult to find out exactly who has done what. The whole process needs to be tightened up.

Mind, the British attitude to food is a bit strange. On the one hand many, many British people have stuffed themselves with meat pies over the decades which contained a lot of gristle blasted off carcasses with high pressure hoses, without complaint. Yet when horse is found in the products, shock, horror!

Personally if horse meat is so much cheaper than beef I wouldn't mind eating some if it had been checked out for bute and the other medicines horses get treated with. Probably better for you than beef - less fat.

And Owen Paterson comes across as a twerp. Initially banging on about how wonderful the British meat industry is and how this whole scandal was down to a potentially criminal conspiracy in mainland Europe. Haven't heard so much of that since the various arrests made in the UK.

We are all to blame.
If you want to keep food cheap, why ask what is in it.
If you can afford to go to farm shops and buy fresh produce at three times the price of the supermarket you must be a rich torie supporting, interbreeding wanker

The farm shop I've started going to, (coincidentally to the horse meat thing, It's only been open a month) isn't significantly more expensive, but the quality of the meat, especially the bacon, is way above average.

Pity the HS2 rail line is going to run straight through it.
