why does egafd use generic names such as 'Petra', etc. when there are perfectly good two name (christian and surname) alternatives that would make the id more unique?

should it not be a policy to always use the most well known two name identification and reduce the number of Petra's, Anne's, Sophie's etc. etc?

in jj's previous thread he says delete 'Petra' as there are too many. If you go to this id you can see the aka of 'Sandy Black' which i think is her most well known name - why not use it?

The main reason is that Christian names alone tend [or used to
tend] to occur much more frequently in Europorn than full ones.
That situation is slowly changing.
I agree that where a full alias occurs relatively frequently it should
be used but there MUST be a 'provenance' for it, i.e. more than
one egafd-listed film where it is definitely used- a problem here is
that often a girl does only a couple of films here under one name,
then goes to the US and does loads under a different name, then
returns here to work. Now, in that case it wouldn't be strictly
acceptable to use an alias, however 'well-provenanced' if it only
occurs in US films not listed here. This can be partially offest by
the cureently-developing inclusion here of Private/Hustler/Evil Angel
etc. titles, but never completely avoided.....
..and as to your specific example: I list that Petra in my own notes
as Petra Noir, simply for convenience' sake, and because it does
have some 'history'. I've never even heard of the alias Sandy
Black applied to her [img]http://www.egafd.com/forum/smileys/shocked.gif[/img]

Sandy Black is her last alias on her id page and i think i jumped on that because i was confusing her with someone's ebi id. but it was merely to illustrate a point rather than suggest this should be her id.

i was suggesting that maybe there should be some form of naming convention on the site that says the most used "two name" id be used as the main alias just to avoid confusion (which i'm assuming is why you use "Petra Noir"). admittedly there's no avoiding the generic one name alias in a lot of cases.

In an ideal world, yes.... the trouble is, many of the films here
still lack complete [or indeed, any] notes. The human mind is simply
better-equipped to store 'associative' names than ordinal numbers.
As it is, flitting between databases as I am wont to do, I have to
keep translating names in my head from 'egafd-speak' to 'iafd-speak'
and 'EBI-speak'.

Sorry to drag this to the top, but it seems worth adding another explanation.

Often a girl is first identified by a particular name, maybe a single first name. Then several films are added to her list in some of which she may be uncredited. When a more common alias or a more complete name is discovered, it may mean a lot of effort to change her default name in the database, especially where it is not possible to tell from the database, how she was credited, if at all, in some of the films already listed. We don't put "as 'name'" against a film title in her list if the credit is the same as the default name. Nor have we always put 'uncredited' against a title in a girl's list where there were no credits. So, for historical reasons, it can be difficult to change a default name and therefore have to change all the 'as' notes against titles, quite apart from the time it may take - when we are far behind as we evidently are if you look at the date of this thread .
