In common with other several other contemporary Spanish
productions I found this quite hard to watch- the lighting is
quite harsh and tricksy- there are admirably clear bits and
then swathes where the colouring is just all wrong; the
editing is wildly choppy, and several scenes are so brief as
to be pointless. The sex, when you can work out who is doing
what and to whom [made difficult in no small part because of
the heavy make-up; I identified Szabina initially only by her
tits], isn't bad. It's this whole 'red' thing that needs to be
avoided... combined with the 'blue' bits there were times when
I thought I'd wandered into Kieslowski's masterpiece [but no;
the sex was more erotic in the latter, and the plot certainly
clearer]. Most of the time it was just the visual equivalent of
a mild headache; the film fails largely by its own pretensions.

appropriately angelic, and one of Mephisto's girls float around

At the end I feel more saddened than cheated or annoyed; there
was so, so much unrealised potential here. At around 100 min.
it's not exceptionally long for a flagship Private title, so if the
director had restrained his ego and pretensions considerably,
ditched the weird lighting and tricks, and lengthened the scenes
this could have been a classic, and still have come in comfortably
under the upper 140 min. bar. Mia and Belladonna, in particular,
are widely judged to have done their finest stuff with Nachoribas,
so they especially have been directorially ill-served here.

Oops- forgot.
These, from the photobook, add a little bit of light to
the above. The BTS itself is another waste of time- basically
Nachoribas deluding themselves that they're doing 'art' and
sucking-up to the director.
