What made some performers stand out from the rest? European or not. I mean, some went on to become stars. Was it becaise of their bodies, face, beauty? Acting skills? Innovation? Pushing the boundaries? Or is it just the result of the marketing machinery?

Who are the "others"?
Cicciolina had neither face or the body of a pornstar, but she became one
at a time (she started out in mainstream/soft core movies) when it was "glamorous"
to do so, and she was willing to push the boundaries of what was acceptable
at the time (pissing, etc), and she toured as well.
Moana Pozzi was pretty much in that same league (she also did mainstream movies),
and she bragged about the numerous encounters with "famous" personalities.
They were the media darlings of the time.
You could not repeat that today.

None of them really became 'stars' in mainstream media, just more- or less-
briefly notorious.

Moana extended that by her disappearance, Staller by running for the Italian
parliament and netting Jeff Koons as husband.
Traci Lords managed to get into mainstream acting but hardly ever as a lead.

Well Traci Lords did manage a so-called "mainstream" career (even in starring roles)
for minor Z-direct to video stinkers, after a few minor roles in movies like HAIRSPRAY.
But only af6ter "repudiating" her former porn career (and by claiming at most she only
did about 10 movies). And in order to sell those stinkers she wisely decided to
continue to use her "porn" name.
Marilyn Chambers in my view did much better, even as she made only few porn
feature movies. She had a more successful mainstream horror career than Traci
would/could ever aspire to.
But Traci Lords was not the major star as some would believe. Ginger Lynn
and Christy Canyon were just as popular as she was, if not more popular.
And Ginger also went to a mainstream career. But Traci screwed them over both
with tax problems, as I understand it.
Lords, Lynn and Canyon came on the scene at the appropriate time when
porn shifted from the East to the West Coast and shot-on-video porn was just
booming. It was a good fix for them all.

Chambers impressed me as being more intelligent than most- and a better
actress than Lords across both genres.

In porn I could never see the fuss about those you mention. Lords had those
weird but alluring tits paired with that weasely scowly face; Canyon was fairly
pretty, I suppose, but many others had bigger and much less saggy tits. Ginger I found... well, unexceptionable, I suppose, sums it up. 'Ho-hum', to be
briefer.
Tami White and Jessica Wylde were more up my street.

Ginger was way more enthusiastic than Lords or Canyon.
Canyon had the tits and plush body. Lords had that nasty, teen quality.
But Ginger delivered the goods in anal and DP category.
Marilyn Chambers was first a mainstream actress, did porn, and went
back to mainstream (and did quite well). She was truly as porn star
and better actress than most.
Tami White I agree with, but Jessica Wylde? Really?
She was neither nasty, that attractive nor really that enthusiastic in her scenes.
For the 1980's any of these on a box cover or credits would get me to rent the tape
without question: Tracy Adams, Honey Wilder, Colleen Brennan, Elle Rio,
Buffy Davis, Rachel Ryan, Erica Boyer, Trinity Loren (early career), and let's not forget Kay
Parker.
For Euro porn in the 1980's any Laura or VMD title that appeared on the shelves I would
grab, even though some were rather dreadful.
