Anyone ever transferred their video collection onto the new fangled DVD-R with a dvd recorder? Encounter any problems? Which DVD recorder did you use?

Yep. Just bought a Panny HS-2 set-top DVD-HD recorder (DVD-R & DVD-RAM & HDD) Amazing piece of kit, simple too, just plug a scart lead up the back of it, press 'play' on the VCR and 'record' on the HS-2 and away you go!. DVD-R is less than 50p for a 2hr disk in SP mode.

I transfered all me cowpats onto DVD, luvverly it were!

What's the gen on digital transfer through a PC. IS it too time consuming and what kit (if you don't have a digital video recorder or converter) do you need to make it viable?

My collection resides in a dark corner of my loft where I fear for it's health. Too big to be kept discreetly down stairs.

I spent ages sodding about with vid-capture stuff on the PC. The set-top solution is simply plug and go and it just works, brilliantly too.

It should do for a grand.

?800 in the shops, possibly less now (a fortnight later!). I could have easily spent that buying and faffing about with vid-capture stuff, not including the time wasted.

I've been thinking about getting one of the stand alone recorders for a while but I'd rather see what it can do before splashing out ?800!

Any chance of a sample? hehe, all costs covered + extras of course!

The Philips (DVDR890) and Panasonic (?)recordable DVD machines currently available are around the ? 400-450 mark

They really are very easy to use.(as easy as vhs to vhs )
Digital to digital ie.mini dv to dvd is fine- as you'd
expect.
Vhs to dvd will not give you a dvd comparable in quality to
those.These machines are good but not THAT good !
If you've got a poorish quality vhs it may clean it up a bit.
But you'll still have a poorish quality copy of it- allbeit on
a shiney dvd !

can you put chapters in as well?
