Hi, I'm new

Hello folks, I'm new to the glamour industry and seeking advice from the wise.

I have a day job which slows me down rather but is funding this project which I have been working on for 8 months now.

I have reached the point where I need a domain and host and while I have drawn up a list of possible, as yet, unregistered domain names I could use some advice on chosing a hosting package. Until I start attracting traffic, my requirements and my ability afford sevices will be modest.

Can anyone offer any advice on hosting companies/packages bearing in mind that don't intend to carry hardcore, neither g/g or b/g.

I've been reading this forum for a while but this is my first post.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Milton,

Might be an idea to put an email address on your profile so people can contact you. I am sure you will get help on here, I always do.
A good place to register a domain name is www.godaddy.com, I find the service there excellent. They also have excellent hosting packages aswell

I always use for .co.uk domains, they are owned by PIPEX so they been around forever ;) and for com/net/biz/org/info as they are lie ?8 a year and a;llow u full dns access and all kinds of stuff.

Hosting wise, All comes down to 2 factors really, and then 2 requirements

Windows or *Nix based, once this is decided you choose Windows you general choose this for ASP and MSSQL based apps but not much use as its usually expensive and not my cuppa :) or *Nix based which is usually PHP and MySQL which is chesper and generally more help and free stuff available.

So id go *Nix unless you want to use ASP :), and go for a few databases to get you started :)

Once you have decided you need 2 requirements :)

Space and Bandwidth everything else is pretty much neither here nor there :)

Ideally you want a company that will grow with you, ie that offers you, 100mb on basic, 1000mb on medium and 10,000mb on advanced so you can buy what you need :), then you need bandwidth again this is usually the most expensive part, you should go with a host that has 5000mb, 50,000mb 100,000mb so you can buy what you need, that way u can keep your funding down and upgrade as and when u need to to keep costs low :)

You need to ask a few questions like, how much is additional storage space ? how much is additional bandwidth ? how much are additional databses ? can i have more than 1 domain point to my space ? can i have multiple websites on my space ? how many pop3 mail boxes do i get ?

But like i said find a company thats reasonanable anc can grow with you :) as theres no point spending ?500 a year for 10,000mb storage and 100,000mb webspace and then u use 2gb for the first 6 months :)

Sorry I've not responded sooner, I've been feeling a little dicky. Even more sorry about the pun! ;o)

Thanks Neil, I was reluctant to put my private email address here but I will soon have another which I will include. I am taking a look at all of the registration and hostin packages suggested.

Thanks also to Cenobitez: *nix's have been the dominant systems in my working life. I know them understand them and can administer them so they are the natural choice. I should be hosted very soon; them comes the thorny question of web design.

Thanks again.
