DVD DUPLICATION > OPINIONS PLEASE

Hi,

I'm just about to set-up a DVD duplication side of my business. We currently do CD duplication for the music industry and they also require some DVD's and thought I should bounce the idea of you guys;

Cost will be ?1.65 each (including VAT @ 17.5%). No minimal order quantity.

This will get you;

Exact duplication of DVD as given to us
Full on face DVD printing
Black Case with ability to put literature inside (generic dvd case)
Outside Inlay for the case

Postage will be dependent upon the level of order (weight), but will be done at cost, no profit on postage and packaging.

Anyone likely to be interested in this? I need some feedback before I outlay the ?2,200 for the duplicating system I'm currently looking at.

I'm always honest about the profit levels we make on our duplication services and do these services primarily at the moment to help musicians. Our profit on the ?1.65 is ?0.25p per unit, excluding VAT.

any queries, my email is rob@basement-studios.co.uk.

or reply...but feedback is appreciated so I know whether or not to invest.

Regards,

Rob.
P.S. Keep up the good work!

So, what guarantee that anyone who sends in something will get the ONLY copy?
Who is to say you wouldn't duplicate it twice, one for your customer and one for your database ensuring future copies being sold on?

Ace,

Our usual practice is to get a signed authenticity form, we then keep the disc on file for upto six months for any re-orders. CD is then put through our shredding machine.

Good point though, however, my business has been established for three years and would lose lots given a court action against us - so what would be the point?

Thanks for the query though it is a valid point and anyone should make sure they are working with a reputable company.

I certainly wish you well, and appreciate the positive reply instead of the usual sarcastic replies given on the forum by smart arses who don't have a clue.

Ace,

Thanks for the feedback, appreciated.

As I say, until I get enough interest in this, I can't really aford to invest all the money into the equipment.

Thanks,

Rob.

Hi Kim, thanks for the email.

No minimal order quantity - if all you want is 1 - thats all we will do! Cost as stated on the forum ?1.65p each.

Even less, if you don't want the generic black case, some people are simply going for the plastic wallets which will cost just ?1 per copy!

If needed, we are also running a service (mainly for ebay users) of mailing the DVD's directly out to the purchasers - this costs just an extra ?0.85p (for the uk).

cheers,

Rob

I think you will do well for small quantities. I do a lot of DVD duplication. Anything less than 20 and they pay quite a bit more than that.

We are more expensive than a lot, but people still come back to us for ease. It's when you do bigger runs, the price matters. Anything over 500 and people can probably get the disc replicated for less than that inc glass master and screen print. May even get Litho print.

The biggest nightmare I get with duplication is the printing. I have trouble with full colour discs, especially if they have grads in it. I use a Microboards Print Factory which was a ?1500 printer.

I have the PF printer too, but for small runs I tend to use the ESPON R220 and put a coating on after, works much better and looks the biz.

The place I feel we can help the most in the industry (is much like in the music industry), sites that sell maybe 1-40 copies a month, we then receive details of the DVD's ordered, duplicate them, package them and send them directly to the customer. Perfect for the 'home producer' to take some of the hassle away.

This only costs ?2.50 inc vat, which I think is bloody good service.

The one problem I am having is exposure to people who need DVD's duplicating. My initial business was in music, I've picked many people in both industries off EBAY. Went to do the same on CQOUT.com and got a ?35 fine direct to my account for contacting a member outside the auction.pants!

Anyhow, anyone needing duplication or anyone knowing of people would be great. We store all the discs in a fire-proof safe. Only one person has access to them and that me, so you can be assured that they shall not go amiss and end up on ebay like some firms do!
