Having just about recovered from Saturdays 15 pubs in 5 hours
I passed out after 30 drinks in 39 degree temperature..piss poor effort

I was watching a few porn vids and was struck by the amount of different accents

Anyone have the definitive answer as to why?

cheers

Not in Australia mate

The only difference down here is sometimes noticeable between
City and Country folk but thats just down to how fast they talk

Same with the Kiwis next door in New Zealand
They all say Fish & Chups

New Zealand is hardly next door, well not in British terms, a good hours flight from Melbourne to Auckland, 500+ miles.

This very subject came up on Radio 4 just a few days ago (accents in general rather than girls). The common view - of the academics from both UK and Oz - was that a thousand years of English spoken in the Uk with little interaction between regions has given rise to dozens of regional accents in the UK. Australia (and NZ) has only had 200 years and with tv and telephones connecting people the chance for differentiation is much reduced.

Most European countries have a range of accents as does the USA. Presumably Asia and Africa have the same. It just Oz that's the exception.

I am not an expert but I would also say that the huge number of accents here will be partly due to the many different races who settled here e.g. Romans, Saxons, Normans, Vikings and others across the centuries. A lot of words used in Scotland and North East England are actually Scandinavian. I have also heard it said that the Liverpool accent takes some of its sounds and nuances from Ireland.

Also apparently the Australian accent is very similar to how the London accent was two hundred years ago before it altered due to people moving in from outside.

But hey I am not a linguist. A cunnilinguist perhaps.
