Hi guys, I am seriousely thinking of going HD. I have heard a few scary stories about extra long editing times etc.
I am looking to buy a Hi def hard drive camcorder but would still like to burn regular DVD's. Somehow films are being filmed and can come out on hd dvd and regular dvd or hd tv and normal tv.
Any help would be greatly appreciated from anyone who has gone hd and knows what it is all about.
The quality is amazing and the detail on computer monitors which can support hd content looks a lot better. I just want to try and get ahead and not get left behind.
Thanks and Merry Christmas
Regards James

Hi James
You seem in the same boat as myself, go HD or not? I?ve looked into it the past few months and not going to bother...... for now! Yes, it looks good, yes there is a small demand, but at the moment there is no over burden to shoot in HD. Give it a few more years and there will be lots of HD stuff around, 10 years it will be the standard.
I?ve just ordered Canopus Edius which edits both formats SD and HD. I was told for HD that you need a powerful dual core machine to do any reasonable editing. As for the camera?s they are coming down I price. I was thinking a buying a Sony HDR-HC3. However no mic input for external microphone and I?ve heard that shooting time (battery life) in HD is very poor.
If you go HD I?d be interested in your experience.
All the best

Hi AM,
Speaking purely as an amateur,As I do it for fun,I can't afford those 5 grands upward pro gears.I bought the HC3 and from my experience,it does produce sharper and punchier picture, but the over all picture, especially the colour is not as 'natural' looking as my old Canon XM1 which is a bit long in the tooth but can still produce really good picture. One thing which makes the HC3 not quite suitable to shoot porn is its inability to cope with fast moving action. If you do a close up shot of say bouncing boobs or rapid thrusting movement, the camera often goes out of focus.I never have this problem with the XM1.So beware. It's a drag to ask your model to do it again but more slowly!!Battery time is not a problem.I bought a 'compatible'battery from ebay @about ?25 and it gives me more than 2 Hrs' shoot no problem. The HC3 can output HD footage in DV to be captured by your pc.
I give it a few months for things to die down a bit then I'll buy the Canon A1.It has a very long battery life and a super focus mechanism.Any of you pro guys reading this can you suggest a wide angle converter for the Canon A1 which is good enough to retain the detail of the HD footage without costing me an arm and a leg? Thanks in advance.

HI James
Have been reliably informed that HD is / will be an editting headache because multiple frames are stored as one ?? and so where you wanted to cut you cant ... I'd stick with what you know for know ...you wont get left behind ..infact the prices will drop and software will make this easier ...plus Intel might get their act together with processors !
Am sticking with Sony DVCAM & using their mastering tapes for now ...
All best
Greg
