Hi all. I'm struggling to design a new website ? my WMV files are currently taking half an hour or more to fully stream ? and they're only 5 minute clips! What should the size and dimensions of a WMV file be so that it streams quick without losing quality? Thanks. Ric Porter

The best thing is to experiment and decide for yourself where to draw the line.
All the ones I've seen have clearly gone for speed over quality.
I think to an extent you can push the quality if you really know how to use your editing software to maximise it - the guys at Atom Films (not porn, but great stuff) seem to have some really high quality fast streams.

640x480 is a good size for clips. If you have HD then 1280x720 is really nice but you get large file sizes if you render it correctly.
Personally we only offer downloads and not streaming. Once we have fast enough speeds to stream HD then i would look at it.

Hi Rico,
I am currently on with my site and encoding the video for the site. I have found that if I use the following settings, I get good quality and the file size isnt any bigger than the websites out there that offer downloads for people with broadband.
Frame size : 720 X 540
Audio format : 64 kbps, 44 khz stereo
Video bitrate : 956 kbps ( this is abit high and this is what people take down to keep the file size down) I like to have mine higher to give good picture quality and it is and the size is fair.
My scene with Lena Leigh and Jonny ran for 35mins and is only 215mb
so 5 min clips should be small enough and this will give you good picture quality. But like Paul says above depends on what software you are using.
hope this helps
Paul

Thanks. Currently my clips are 88MB, around 5 mins long and 640 x 480 pixels. That's as much as I know but they take like half an hour to fully buffer up!

Hi Ric
I wondered what you were up to these days. I am new to this site and am stumbling around it at the moment but everyone seems keen to help.
You asked a question which I was wondering about too. Due to the mags going downnhill fast decided to try a website (garrysgirls.com).
i am not going to be as rich as you are at this rate though lol. Hope you are doing well.
Regards
Garry

It seems to be a little understood fact that making money out of porn websites is a job requiring some skill and knowledge - you can't just make one that looks pretty and wait for the money to roll in !
On the subect of video file size you need to apply a bit of simple maths. Most people with broadband can download at, at least, 500 kilobits/second so it makes sense to encode your video at the same speed and it will download in "real time" - i.e second for second .
So - a 5 minute video clip lasts for 300 seconds (5 x 60 seconds) and so a good size for it will be 500 x 300 (to get the number of kilobits in the file) divided by 8 (to get the number of kilobytes) and then converted to Megabytes by dividing by a thousand and you get 18.75Megabytes.
It's a bit more complicated than that really because there are 1024 kilobytes in a Megabyte except when you are talking about download speeds when there are a 1000, but it's close enough...
