VHS capture services

Hi there,

I was looking for some technical advice and assistance.

I have a few scenes recorded on NTSC VHS tapes my partner shot a few years ago. Just some amateur gonzo stuff, which was going to go on her web site before she quit.

Like I said, they are recorded onto NTSC VHS tape. I bought a capture device (Canopus ADVC 55).

This device is supposed to handle NTSC signals, and it does. Only in black and white though, and only via a composite connection, which is annoying because this is not mentioned by the manufacturer.

So, for those in the know, is there anyone out there who offers a discreet, trust-worthy service that could capture these scenes in full colour for me?

I don't require any fancy DVD creation (I was going to do that myself with Vegas 5), I would like them captured in any kind of raw avi or mpeg2 format.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, in advance,

BC

Are you using an NTSC-compatible PAL VCR to play back the tapes? If so, that explains the trouble, as they don't put out a true NTSC signal - they put out a PAL/NTSC hybrid called PAL60. Modern televisions can display it. However, most video capture devices accept either pure PAL or NTSC, but not the hybrid. The exception seems to be Pioneer DVD recorders, which have a setting called '525 System', which will happily accept proper NTSC or PAL60. Where are you based? The alternative is to find a true multi-standard VCR.
