We never instigate interesting discussion so here goes:

From time to time we have models that MUST break between every scene no matter how small a duration to go off and light up. I personally don't like it. It kills energy and having to go fetch the model is a pain in the ass on top of all the other tasks that have to be performed on the day.

I know I'm sounding like a grumpy old man. But I wonder, as I don't smoke..how many models would appreciate a cloud of my bottom gases filtering into their lungs before, during and after shooting?

Which, I should also point out is a far healthier passive inhalation.

only ever had one who wanted to smoke, and stupidly I failed to see the ashtray on the left side with a fag butt in for the next set of stills...

It's that desperate cigarette between getting off the train and getting into my car that always amuses me...

i guess the way out of the girls having a fag in between sets is to say to the girl the shoot is this many hours long and you will not be able to smoke during this time, unless you state it is a 10min break etc in which they should be allowed to have a ciggie, i myself am a smoker so will defend in saying perhaps the girls are simply a bit nervous or just typically extremely addicted in which case if your allowing them to have a ciggie then they will take it,so bringinging it back to my first point which i myself would respect is say no smoking during shoot, if they worked in a factory or shop they wouldnt be allowed one untill an official break so make it clear to the model b4 the shoot begins, there hope that helps, everyone will know where they stand then wont they

Surely there are as many non smoking models as smokers? If so,why not hire non smokers,it's your prerogative.
Obviously though,if you models smoke,during an official break they could smoke,drink,eat or whatever,as is the norm.
It sounds like you need to lay down some stipulations at the outset,afterall your paying them to model not smoke.

But surprisingly ..a lot of models don't bother to read it..some don't even check out our sites before they arrive.

I personally don't mind models being nervous thru the entire shoot..some energy is better than one!

You could service the market for smoking fetish material thereby making positive use of the model's vice.

Interesting point. Most call sheets I get for my, broadcast and non-porn work, stipulate that no alcohol can be consumed whilst on the producer's time. Clearly this is because the production company's insurance provider will not insure for incidents that may be attributed to intoxication. Also if I return from lunch two sheets to the wind I cant shoot in the afternoon. As the porn industry perhaps gets more professional, it will presumably become the norm that no substances that might impair working efficiency will be allowed. There is also a legal requirement for a producer to provide a safe working environment.

I not suggesting models shouldn't be nipping outside for a smoke if it doesn't interfere with the shoot, and clearly everybody has to eat, but I'd rather cast and crew saved the booze and wacky baccy til the wrap.
