Sorry it's taken me so long to reply - just got back from holiday.
By bi-monthly I meant twice a month and you're right, it is ambiguous (I must admit, I did not know that until I looked it up - always just thought it meant twice a month).
So I might indeed say "twice monthly installment" instead next time to get rid of that nasty ambiguity
