Thanks for all the advice, guys.

I assumed that all files should be easily transerable to disc, because this is what I intend to do. Am I wrong?

That's certainly not been my experience. About 50% of the files I've d/loaded have utterly refused either to burn, or to play once burned.
asf/wmv/the different mpeg platforms/mov/divx/mickeymouseplayer, not to mention split files and all the gubbins required to unzip them (e.g winrar), decode them and re-join them. I even invested in a format-transfer program.........you need a doctorate just to understand the Help page.
Probably OK if you download from a reputable site, but steer clear of KaZaa etc. unless you have unlimited time, patience and several science degrees.

Totally agree JJ about P2Ps

Even kazaalite is now full of mis named files not to mention some files containing viruses, trojans & spyware

Then consider that most if not all material on P2Ps is in violation of copyright
having just seen a student taken to court for music infringements porn uploaders can't be to far away IMHO

Having conducted a number of surveys on web video downloading and VCD/DVD quality all the survey's leaned heavily towards DVD quality programmes as it can be watched on TV and PC. So best to offer both options and then the punters who want to spend the time downloading can and the people who like full TV quality also have an option available.

I understand that one counter measure against illegal downloading is to make big falsely named files available and you don't realise you have wasted your time downloading them until you view the results.

The concept of a free lunch is a misnomer

Given that many who upload full movies then warn that any downloader not staying online & sharing 24 hours a day will have their access terminated

Utter bollocks...like these pricks actually own the stuff

cheers
