There's a story that the old slightly less than the round amount, and I'm talking about the pre-decimal days, is not so much to do with thinking you are getting a better deal but was introduced to stop shop assistants stealing. Tills gave a "ping" when they were opened to give change, so the shop keeper knew that a sale was being made.
