Were viruses a problem on Bulletin Boards?

Virus, hackers and the likes of do this stupid stunt (or whatever you want to call it!), to promote themselves!
The virus is the best way to advertise yourself to the world as an "expert" in computers and programming! This can either hinder or help them. They care not for your computer, but the money they can make from the damage they cause.
