I'm a small movie maker. I recently just upgraded my home system which can now produce broadcast quality video editing.
I'm considering moving into the porn making business.
So, what do I need to know...
Best regards,
Alex

Just because someone has a sharp knife doesn't mean that they can become a brain surgeon.
"So, what do I need to know..." - What sort of a dumb question is that?

THE MAN WITH A PLAN NEEDS ADVICE NOT BITCHY CRITICISM
BESIDES YOU ARE ONLY GOOD AT WATCHING PORNFILMS NOT MAKING THEM!
man with a plan I suggest you contact T.V X and see whats hot and whats not then you decide agood script.
Get your models there are afew agencies or advertise in the stage or freeads.
Make it fun and different if you can and my advice would be to make it candid as possible the viewers love something real not to acted.
As you can gather from the first two nasty comments to you the industry is full of Big Headed idiots who won't help.
Anyway Good Luck.
And Enjoy the world of PORN.

Re: Breaking into the Business...
Hi, manwithaplan. There's basically two types of video producer in Britain. There's the Television X size of producer and then there's the guy with a camera in his living room type of producer, of which I am one.
The first thing you have to do is make a movie. Without doing that, you won't know how well you go with this business or what type of videos to make.
The people who have helped me most in this business have been the girls themselves. I only film girls, by the way.
After you've made a movie you've got to decide what to do with it. Do you duplicate and sell it yourself to people or do you sell the copyright to a big fish? Selling videos yourself isn't all easy money and it can be difficult finding the customers. Advertising is the only way. You're basically running a retail video business then.
Selling the movie to a big producer might be your best bet if you're producing broadcast quality stuff and don't want the hassle of duplicating and retailing it. Selling the movie to a small producer like myself will pay for the expense of the video and I don't require exclusive copright. Then again, I don't go for professionally produced stuff either.
What's going to be your gimmick? What kind of video do you want to make? It's great having all these lovely girls cheering you up and they're great to have around and get to know. Myself, I don't fuck the girls and don't ask them for it. I'm not into one-off fucks. I might be a rarity though. Who knows?
I guess some people get into the business to get laid. There are easier (and cheaper) ways to get that! I'm sure though, the opportunity will arise if you make enough vids. Law of averages etc. Maybe you're into making boy/girl vids?
My website is at hgpvideo.com and my email address is there if you want to email me.
Cheers,
Dave Armstrong.

Man With A Plan
Re: Breaking into the Business...
Thanks Tit Man and Pornman for that friendly advice.
A few basic questions that you'll maybe be able to help me with.
Let's tackle the money first of all.
I'm not going to say the obvious "how much exactly" should I be looking to pay run-of-the-mill actors; but what would be considered a bad pay-off and what would be considered a good pay-off.
Secondly, where exactly does the law lie here? Now, technically, is 'hardcore' not illegal? Therefore, even if I'm filming it and planning on editing, am I not possessing illegal material somehwre in there.
Finally, you say that "broadcast" quality isn't neccesary. Now while my system handles "broadcast" quality, getting the cameras for "broadcast" quality isn't always practical for this sort of shoot. Who purchases non-broadcast material. And how much would I be looking to get for say per scene, per length, etc...
Best regards,
Alex

Re: Breaking into the Business...
Forget it 'Man With A (half baked) Plan.' It's all horribly expensive and the only people who purchase 'non-broadcast material' are your own retail customers. Since you don't seem to have any, you would have to acquire some by advertising - which doesn?t work anymore, even if you have advertising money and know how to put ads together, which I assume you don't.
If you want to do it as a hobby, good luck to you. But if you think your going to start a viable business you?re living in dreamland. Even some of the best adult movie producers in the UK (my colleagues) are only making a living at the moment and they have the benefit of technical ability, international contacts and years of experience! Sorry to rain on your parade and all that, but facts are facts...

Re: Breaking into the Business...
I agree with you a but, TTT. If I was starting up now, it would be very hard to get up and running. Not like when I got into the business in 1989 when the ads pulled in loads of sales and I only needed to do a mailshot once every few months.
Of course, you've gotta advertise but the returns aren't what they used to be.
I'd advise you, Alex, not to give up your day job but just make some videos. Enjoy it and don't worry about any business side. Then, when you've got some half decent footage, you can sell it one way or another if you want.
The guy who makes "Brighton Belle Films" for me is a shoe mender. He makes videos for fun and if he can make a bit on the side by selling some to me, he's happy, I'm happy and my customers are happy.
I made a small fortune in the late eighties, early nineties and that was from mainly hard-core vids and then I got busted in 1992. I've never gotten back to where I was before I was busted.
What's illegal? Wiping your nose can be illegal. Doing everything by the book you're going to have to get every damn minute of video BBFC certificate 18 rated and that costs a bloody fortune.
Fuck that. The porn squad know where I am and they know what I'm doing. I'm not taking liberties. I know the limits. Don't push your luck too far if you're UK based. But I don't think you need worry about all that. Just make a few vids. Get into the feel of having a rapport with your model. Have a laff. It's a good hobby.
