Because the Tories were in power and approved the use of the R18 certificate when it was put forward by the BBFC.

You're right, it was Labour, following a High court judges decision on explicit porn, which is when our top shelf magazines became harder over night!

Via the Video Recordings act 1984 and the inroduction of the Restricted 18 certificate for the first time.

Steered through the committee stages of Parliament by none other than the old 'toe sucker' footy fan David Mellor.

But to be fair, nothing was allowed in an R18 at that stage other than what was already in an 18 certificate until, as number 6 said, until the high court challenge which was under this Labour Government.

It wasn't exactly a gift from Labour, they just happened to be in power.

That could have easily happened under Labour as well.

Jack Straw visited Soho and was disgusted actually (do a google search it was in the papers too and I remeber delivering a consinment of tapes to a shop that just got raided that morning and was back in business by the afternoon) It was a compromise to have the R18 certificate and the BBFC did so because David Sullivan, Primetime and another company put the money up to go all the way to the European High Courts.

The tories wouldnt have such a thing discussed opver tea in The House Of Lords. I dont blame them. i wished they kept it swept under the carpet too.

The BBFC were in a prime position to regulate it so was within their interests to make it happen and lets not forget that they always claim they are not under government control anyway.

if the tories really cared they wouldnt have fucked up on the loophole that allowed porn to be legally sold right now because of the loophole that it was not ratified by the high courts in the first place. So all those court cases over the years were a waste of time because technically they were illegal but all those convicted cannot do anyhting about reversing their convictions....

I agree, although I wish she hadn't have cut her hair. !sad! I always thought she could have easily done a turn in front of the camera, if she had so desired.
