How to promote / sell a completed film?

Hi,

as someone who's just starting out filming amateur films, I'm interested to know the best way to go about selling them. I don't intend to sell my first few attempts in any way as they'll be a kind of 'learning experience' for me, however I will likely want to sell future projects.

What I want to know is how many films are sold that don't go through offical channels, i.e. censors? Are there quite a lot of films out there, doing the rounds, that were filmed by amateurs, that have never been offically 'okayed' for release?

Say I film a couple in their bedroom having sex, then decide to place small ads here and there selling the film for ?10, (obviously with the couples knowledge and consent.) Does this kind of thing happen, if so how frequently? Or do 99% of people who make films send them to the censors for offical rating?

Let me know your thoughts on this as I know a few of you are experienced film makers.
