Re: what's the best software to build a web site?
Mr.Dong,
Everyone will tell you this pkge or that one.
Best starting point is to get a copy of "Web Pages made easy" mag in
all larger branches of W.H.Smith.- unlike most it deals solely with website creation.
It gives a great overview as well as dealing with specifics.
At ? 4.99 it'll probably save you a lot of wasted time + money
Of course, you can either buy or download the software OR build online
and have it hosted by the same co.
That's probably your 1st decision.
ie.........
Homestead.com is one of the biggest of the latter.
There easy, you don't have to use Homestead.com as part of your url and
they allow most adult mainstream adult content.

Hi,
I use Net Objects Fusion, you can upload it easy using FTP.
No HTML at all, to put text on, create a text box and then just type.
Pictures, you just put them in an assets file and then click on them and put them where you want to.
E-mail me if you want to try it out, If you are anywhere near east london pop in and i will show you.

One of the best must be Macromedia Dreamweaver. You can use it in WYSIWYG mode and never have to worry about HTML.
However, if you really want to produce a good site, you can't avoid having to get your hands dirty at some point and delve into a bit of HTML.
Thats my viewpoint anyway.
Cheers

Re: what's the best software to build a web site?
But for those who can read and understand HTML, looking at a code made by dreamweaver is a bit of a nightmare. It puts in all manner of irrelevant stuff that makes no difference to the way the page looks, and frankly does nothing to help page loading speeds for dial-up users.
I have studied web design as part of my media production course over the last 4 years, and found the best way for me is to use Adobe Pagemill to create the pages first, then go into the HTML and remove all unwanted/un-required code leaving it looking as if it had been 'hand coded' in HTML from the start.
You can upload any html file by FTP, by the way, providing your host gives you ftp access. Geocities now dont give FTP access to free users and yo have to go through their 'Easy Upload' system, which is fine if you have 5 or 6 pages, but gets very tedious if you have a big site with a complicated tree structure.

Re: what's the best software to build a web site?
If your after the best, Macromedia Studio MX is the one. Out of the package you mostly use Fireworks (where you do the graphics) and dreamweaver (the web page creation part of it). But it costs a few hundred quid.

Re: what's the best software to build a web site?
I bought a magazine called Practical Web Pages recently
(it is a bi-monthly Web project guide).
This issue gave away a time limited version of Macromedia
Studio MX (full product).
Magazine included loads of tutorials for Dreamweaver MX,
Fireworks MX etc.
Each issue concentrates on a specific product or area for
web design.
Produced by Future publishing.
