Messenger Service Pop-Up Spam

Has anyone got any tips on how to stop those bloody annoying new pop-ups that have appeared with XP? The ones that ping out of nowhere even when your browser isn't open? I think the facility is intended for antivirus and other updates but it's being misused by spammers. Is there any freeware around to stop them?

The firewall would be your best bet but it's often impractical for home users.
