I spoke to a couple of the editors at Galaxy Publications today , who told me that they are having trouble getting connected to this site.
I had a similar problem about a week ago. Can any one offer any suggestions as to why this is happening?
Keep up the good work

Re: is there a problem with the site?
i'm guessing your friends are on the blueyonder/telewest network. there's a problem with some proxy servers not having the correct detail for bgafd.
if you - or anyone who knows of someone having similar problems - could pass this on, we'd be grateful.
there are 4 sets of instructions: intenet explorer - dial up/broadband and netscape dial up/broadband.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
internet explorer - dial up
1. open my computer
2. open control panel
3. open internet options
4. choose the connections tab
5. click on the connection you use to connect to blueyonder - it will probably be the one with (default) next to it. for many people this will be blueyonder connection manager.
6. click the settings button.
7. put a tick in use a proxy server.
8. make sure there is nothing filled in in the address and/or port boxes. if these are grey and you can't edit them don't worry, simply go to step 9.
9. click the advanced button.
10. if any boxes are filled in, make them blank (click on each box and use the del and backspace keys)
11. at the top of this window should be a line which says http and then address and port.
on this line only, use the following settings:
address: webcache.blueyonder.co.uk
port: 8080 or 3128
12. click ok to everything until you get back to the control panel, and then if you are connected to the internet, disconnect and reconnect. if you don't disconnect and reconnect, the changes won't kick in.
if you can't get any pages at all after doing this check that everything is typed correctly - a single stray space, dot or spelling mistake will prevent this from working at all.
if you want to get rid of the proxy server to undo the changes is very simple - follow the above steps up to step 7 and then remove the tick from use a proxy server - there's no need to delete all the entries we put in, as they will simply be ignored. this also has the advantage that if you wish to re-enable the proxy settings, you only have to put the tick back again.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
internet explorer - broadband
1. open my computer
2. open control panel
3. open internet options
4. choose the connections tab
5. click the lan settings button.
6. click the settings button.
7. put a tick in use a proxy server.
8. make sure there is nothing filled in in the address and/or port boxes. if these are grey and you can't edit them don't worry, simply go to step 9.
9. click the advanced button.

on this line only, use the following settings:
address: webcache.blueyonder.co.uk
port: 8080 or 3128
12. in the exceptions box, put the following (copy and paste this if you want to):
192.168.*;localhost;127.0.0.1;*.blueyonder.co.uk
13. click ok to everything until you get back to the control panel. close internet explorer and start it up again (this is not usually neccessary but is occasionally needed)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
netscape - dial up
1. open netscape.
2. go to the edit menu and choose preferences.
3. click the [+] next to advanced and this will expand the list options.
4. click on proxies.
5. choose manual proxy configuration and click view.
6. there should be a line which says http and then address and port.
on this line only, use the following settings:
address: webcache.blueyonder.co.uk
port: 8080 or 3128
7. click ok to everything and restart netscape. if you are connected to the internet, disconnect and reconnect.
if you can't get any pages at all after doing this check that everything is typed correctly - a single stray space, dot or spelling mistake will prevent this from working at all.
if you want to get rid of the proxy server to undo the changes is very simple - follow the above steps up to step 5 and then select dierct connection to the internet - there's no need to delete all the entries we put in, as they will simply be ignored. this also has the advantage that if you wish to re-enable the proxy settings, you only have to select manual proxy configuration again.

Re: is there a problem with the site?
I've been having problems for about 10 days now. I got very prompt help from Phil when I contacted him by e-mail and he managed to get me connected using Internet Explorer.
I still can't connect using the Opera browser however. If any Techies out there have any idea how I can configure Opera so that I can use it to browse this site again I would be very grateful. I find Opera makes it much easier to read the forum using its smart mouse gestures.
cheers

(PS it was a nightmare trying to catch up with the forum after not being able to access it for 5 days. I nearly went blind reading all those posts!)

Re: is there a problem with the site?
I got this reply when I contacted blueyonder:-
- Thank you for your email to blueyonder Technical Support.
Opera is unable to log on to MSN messenger communities and a host of other services. However Opera does have a facility to allow it to act as Microsoft Internet explorer 5.0.
Please go to file-prefrences-connections-Browser Identification tab and select Identify as MSIE5.0
We do not support Opera as a browser at present, but I hope this helps to resolve the issue.
Kind regards, -
This wasn't much use since I already had Opera configured that way.
I got no reply when I forwarded a couple of Phil's replies to me to them for their comment.
cheers

Re: is there a problem with the site?
Up until recently I've been unable to get direct to the forum from 'favourites', but all sorted now. Those who have the misfortune to be using blueyonder as their isp in one from or another might be interested in looking at www.bulbyonder.co.uk

Re: is there a problem with the site?
I've had probs getting the forum (and the database) recently, and had blamed my ISP (Freeserve).
I also use Opera as a back-up browser, which loaded Bgafd with no probs from the start, although this too has recently suffered from not logging on a few times a day. Only solution that works for me is to try again later. It doesn't seem necessarily peak-related, as it blew me out at 0500 this morning !!
I tried reconfiguring Connection according to the instructions for proxy, and got 'access forbidden'.

Re: is there a problem with the site?
have you contacted ntl about your problem?
as things are currently okay, wait and see if they carry on working properly. if you continue having problems, you may want to try this:
follow the appropriate set of instructions in my other post and add the server settings most local to you, listed on this page:
obviously, write down whatever settings you find in your browser before overwriting them, as you may want to go back to them later on.
let us now how you get on. if this works, we can pass it on to others.
