question for all techies out there. Does a computer hard disc retain images from web sites that have been visited but not downloaded. In other words,
images held in a computers Cache ? Are the Cache images retrievable or are
they deleted when you empty the temporary internet files ? Or is only the cookies recorded on a hard disc ?
I assumed only downloaded pictures were saved. Anybody know ?

Re: technical question
Nothing is actually deleted from your hard disc. What is deleted is the File reference name but the file is still there until space is needed. Then the OS can use the space for something new.
At least thats my understanding.

Everything you look at on the web is actually downloaded to your PC. This includes all the text, plus all the pictures (gif & jpeg files). This is why there is a delay while all the files on a page are downloaded
You can view these files as follows (actual directories vary depending on release of Windows used). Below is for Windows XP
Open Windows Explorer and find directory 'Documents and Settings'.
Then find a directory for your userid (maybe administrator).
Then find directory 'Local Settings'.
Then find directory 'Temporary Internet Files'.
Within that directory are a number of other directories, which contain all
the files.
You can use Internet Explorer to Delete Temporary Internet Files, but as somebody has said, they are not actually deleted from the hard disk, but
the pointer to them is deleted.
They may be deleted at some future date if the space is needed on the hard disk, but they may be there for months or years. With the right software these files can be retrieved.
The only way is to format the hard disk, but even then I believe files can be retrieved (the secret services have programs to retrieve deleted files from hard disks).

Re: technical question
Window washer deletes all the temporary files, cookies, and goodness knows what else, and even has a bleach facility where it overwrites the files with garbage leaving no trace of where you have been on the net.
