I have Joe Strummer singing this Jimmy Cliff classic. Hardcore reggae? Try Junior Mervin's 'Police and Thieves', Joe Gibb and The Professionals 'State of Emergency' and Prince Far I 'Under Heavy Manners' all musically explosive

Yes Steve UB40 did a cover of Many Rivers To Cross. I usually love UB40s stuff but that track was dreadful. Ali Cambells worst vocals ever.

UB40 did two albums of covers Laubor of Love 1&2 and they rightly gave the royalties to the original Jamaican artists who were by that point financially struggling. To this day UB40 are big heros in Jamaica for bringing several unheard tracks to a global audience. Having a number one hit in Jamaica doesnt make the artist much money due to the small population. UB40s covers gave the songs a worldwide market.

Compare that with people like Eric Clapton and The Stones who stole music from American blues men and Jamaican artists and never paid royalties to the songwriters. Eric Clapton was a big fan of Enoch Powell if I recall correctly.
