Empire's top 10 action flicks

Post by DC »

Here's the last Empire top 10 most influential from today's Indie. This time its action movies:

Raiders of the Lost Ark

King Kong (1933)

Die Hard

Goldfinger

Seven Samurai

Once upon a Time in the West

Apocalypse Now

The Adventtures of Robin Hood (1938)

Lawrence of Arabia

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

All worthy enough films, I think, but it's an even more disparate lot then the prvious ones. All fine examples of other, more clearly defined genres.

Although some of the Empire choices have been a bit odd, several of the articles have been worth reading. Hasn't convinced me to go out and buy empire, but they've been quite entertaining as freebies.

I wouldn't have put King Kong, Crouching Tiger, Apocalypse Now or Lawrence Of Arabia into the category of action films. I suspect they're there because Empire couldn't shoe-horn them in under any other label. There's as much action in The Godfather films, or North By North-West.

Oh, and if you're going to choose a Bond, From Russia With Love or On Her Majesty's Secret Service would be better options, imho.

I agree with regards all the films you mention, and have problems with others too. From Russia With Love is my favourite Bond.

Never mind Hard Boiled! Where was The Killer??
Crouching Soundman, Hidden Backpains was a load of bollocks.
I absolute hate that wire work shit. Some of us can actually do 720's & triple kicks without the aid of bastard wires.
As for Bond films, well you can't beat The Spy Who Loved Me.
Pure class.
Even though I prefer Dalton's Bond in The Living Daylights.

And where was Enter The Dragon on that list!!!

I do feel that 'Die Hard' is the daddy and changed the concept of action films over the last decade or so and everything following has taken it's cue from it. I've noticed that in every single one of these Empire polls you've put up, DC, that they have ALL included a very recent 'influential' film. I can't understand why. 'King Kong' is still unbelievable today especially if you imagine it's 1933 and the world as we know it is a million miles away technologically and all there is is Shirley Temple, WC Fields. Mae West and the 'human' monsters of film. Truly groundbreaking. There's a particularly good film missing from this list but wont come to me right away.

Agree totally. This suggests 'Golfinger' is the best Bond and it isn't. 'From Russia With Love' is in my opinion too. 'Licence to Kill was the best of the later ones i thought but not up to FRWL

Enter The Dragon hardly top drawer stuff they should of brought in a real fighter for dr Han and apart from a few small Bruce fights its just a very good bad movie !
and as for your Triple kicks ...ummm id like to see you try that is unless you really are Hwang Jang-Lee ?
Though i do agree on the bond film i can belive a real Scot would prefer that sassanac over Sean Canary!

Hwang Jang Lee is a damned fine kicker.
Yes I do them for real. After 25 years of training, I bloody hope so!!
Enter The Dragom was one of the most influential Martial Arts films ever!
"THE" film that brought martial arts it to the wests attention.
Remember the sudden 70's boom off the back of it?
Way more influence that Crouching....
