For all its myriad faults, Royalty is still, by and large, held in high esteem by the world's public. A good thing. But it's the esteem they hold by us brits that matters. Do remember that the Prime Minister answers to the Queen and not vice-versa. One of the most important roles of Royalty is to keep the Government in check. Think about how much worse Mrs Thatcher could have been had we been a republic.
