New Order - World In Motion must be the only half-decent football song ever recorded
Shame about John Barnes rapping, though
records that never made no 1 but should have done

Re: records that never made no 1 but should have done
I quite liked it, especially the nudge-nudge lyric 'there's only one way to beat them/get round the back..'. Quite subversive for a footy song, that. And it's still the only recorded instance of John Barnes doing anything remotely useful in an England Shirt.

Next you will be believing that the rankings are actually based on sales figures
I know a few music store owners and the pressure that record companies
bring to bear on these owners is scary
The difference in sales of being ranked number 1 as opposed to number 10 is megabucks
cheers

Re: records that never made no 1 but should have done
There was a major investigation over here in the early 1980s when Dire Straits got to number one with Private Investigations, a song I never heard all the way through since it put me into a coma after 47 seconds. A bit of dodgy number counting got that to the top. More recently, record companies on the hype have been buying up thousands of their own artists' records.
The singles market is primarily aimed at the "no grass on the pitch" brigade these days. Which may explain why R Kelly is so popular.

Private Investigations was a return to the bad old days of 15-20 minutes songs.Think that changed mid seventies-thank god
Now you take Dire Straits-Twisting by the Pool-thats what a single should sound like.About the only one from them that I will listen to
How dumb are the consumers to buy albums & singles on the strength of a chart rankings or even worse a tv advert like
U2......best band in the world or
Bon Jovi.....hardest working band in the world
Must work though otherwise they wouldn't do it
cheers
