This really depends on what sort of music is played!!!

Nobody has mentioned Andres Segovia, Jose Feliciano, John Williams or Julian Bream... all classical guitarists.

Blues/Rock... to add to some of those mentioned above, surely Big Bill Broonzy, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, BB King, Buddy Guy, Pete Green and Jeff Beck also deserve a mention.

Townsend cannot be classed as a good axeman, songwriter yes, guitar god no way.

Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, Robin Trower, Mike Campbell, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Billy Gibbons, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Can't include Clapton, he hasn't produced much of quality in the last 30 years.

I love Pink Floyd but Gilmour is good, not great.

Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, all technically great but not able to write a decent song between them.

Gilmour is GREAT in my opinion, I was there, watching him play Comforatbly Numb at Earls Court in 1994, and he moved me goddamit, he moved me!
