Re: Best guitarist
Pat Metheny plays jazz guitar, that is he couldn't play the same solo twice.
Santana I find boring and Slash was pretty average.
Kirk Hamster I agree with, he did a great rendition of Little Wing at the City Hall, Newcastle in 1988.
Talking of The Toon why has no bugger named Mr Knopffler?
Sambora is a great guitar player. Pity he is a bit too commercial.
And though not a technical wizard how about Glasgow's finest, Mr Angus Young?
In a band situation the two guys from Judas Priest, Tipton and Downing were brilliant together.
A few names to juggle with are Jan Ackerman from Focus, Uli Jon Roth, Ronnie Montrose and Leslie West from Mountain.
Though not my cup of tea, or coffee, are Robert Cray and Buddy Guy.

Re: Best guitarist.....MY choices
Glad Randy Rhoads was mentioned, but no Stevie Ray Vaughan or The Edge? Before anyone scoffs at Mr The Edge, he has the ability to make a single note have the effect of several notes, simply and fucking effective!!
We're always gonna have Vai/Van Halen/Satriani/Clapton etc, but there are some brilliant guitarists out there. Punk never had any real guitar heroes, although Mick Jones wrote some great stuff, but I doff my cap to Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols who had never had a lesson, and learned riffs from records. His playing is so bad, its amazing. Again, very simple chord structures and MAXIMUM effect!!
