Fleming hated the idea of a Scot playing the English superspy---until he saw the first couple of films. In one of the last books before his death, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, he introduced a Scottish link to the commander's background. I believe there has to be a barely concealed bastard element to the character, which is why Connery succeeded and Moore couldn't hope to compete. Roger could deliver the dry, humorous lines but, given his history of back pain, just didn't fit in the physical element of the movies.

My choice in order of effectiveness and plausibility: Connery, David Niven (okay, Casino Royale was a piss-take, but Niven proved he could have done the job if it had gone ahead a decade before), Brosnan, Dalton (way too serious), Lazenby (still think OHMSS would have been the pick of the crop if big Tam had stayed with the series) and Moore.

brosnans too quiet for me,at 1st thought connery was a bit conceated/sarcastic but got used to him by thunderball,a view to a kill was 1 of the better ones with moore there are a few more as well octopussy/moonraker.

None of them! If you read the books the character is fuck all like any of them. He's battle scared, manic depressive and almost psychotic. A far more interesting character than is on screen. This slimey ladies man shit makes me puke.
