Get an Epson. Most manufacturer's printers are all cheap but it's the cartridges that will leave you broke. Get Epson because the cheaper compatible cartridges (ie non-Epson made) and normally better priced than their lexmark/canon etc equivalents.

Agree 100%, those with the model number prefixed by Photo (surprise, surprise) tend to give the best results for graphics.

Most printers are pretty cheap - its the ink that is expensive.
You can get nice combo printers - the HP one I have is a fax/photocopier/printer/scanner combo. All for less than ?200.

Epson - BEWARE!
If you do buy an Epson, make sure it's not one with a chip on the ink cartridge.
I've got one of those and what happens is that when the ink runs out, the print management software tells the chip it's empty so even if you go out and buy a bottle of ink and a syringe to refill it - it will still report back to your PC as being empty. It also means that no-one manufactures cheap generic alternatives so you get stung for about ?20 a cartridge and anyone with an inkjet will know how few decent quality pages you get per cartridge.
You can get a gadget that will allow you to reprogramme the chip, but all-in-all its a bit of a hassle.
I think the cartridge technology is called "Intellidge" or something like that.
More info here. You can also buy the reprogrammer from that site.

Re: Epson - BEWARE!
the ability of a printer to use generic cartridges is a good point. i use a Lexmark Z52 and get cheap, non-branded cartridges from the excellent Viking:
