I was always under the impression The Exorcist was banned because it got caught up in the whole, stupid 'video nasty' business in the early eighties, where police once swiped Apocalypse Now off the shelves because it sounded a little like Cannibal Apocalypse. It was certainly on the shelves for a while (and, in it's original Warner Bros. bulky black sleeve, now worth a bob or two).

check out the early 60s/late 60s/70s horror films some are really worth staying up late for:eg blood on satans claw etc.
