Yes, a withdrawal from Iraq and replaced by UN peacekeeping force. No one will get near Bush in the elections after his gung-ho approach after Sept 11th. Patriotic Yanks love it

Bimmer, not everybody agrees with Giles.......trust me!, he just likes stating the obvious, as far as 9/11 goes, it was a nightmare for everyone, not just America, the real debate was do you do it by political measures or force, years of sanctions only hurt ordinary iraqi,s, and to leave him in power, well! who,s to ever know that in 2/3/4 years time he didn,t unleash some nasty piece of weaponary on the hated west.
We can only hope that some moderate iraqi leadership emerges, and the people can rebuild a decent society using thier own oil revenues.
Whether America and allies were right to invade, time will tell, but I can tell you one thing, all the peacnicks and liberal thinkers given the choice of living in iraq or the USA, both pre and post war would loose a limb to live in the States no question about that.

I think you should find a list of the people, and the countries they were originally from, who died on September 11, 2001. America, and its financial heart at the World Trade Centre and its emotional heart of New York, may have been the primary target, but few places on the planet had no reason to mourn that day. Check with the American Red Cross, the New York City fire department and others about how much money was sent by people all over the world, some of whom could ill afford it, in the wake of the attack.

September 11 should have been a glue that held the people of the planet together. Instead, the US draped a flag around the atrocity and used it as a justification for the things Bush wanted to do anyway.

A friend of mine described the scene in a newspaper that night. Sky News showed coverage of some Congressmen arriving at the scene and singing The Star Spangled Banner, at which point one guy---a decent family man, by no means left wing or anti-American---said "And they wonder why the world hates them." Maybe US citizens saw that as a poignant moment, an avowal of the nation's abiding spirit; a lot of people saw it as either political opportunism or an incredibly crass, inappropriate way of paying tribute to thousands of people who had been murdered.

The US armed forces may very well have to withdraw from Iraq next year; the people won't forgive the spilling of the blood of their sons and daughters for long. The UN might very well screw up if and when it takes over; but a multi-national force may be more difficult to hate than a predominantly Christian force.

I've said before that America deserves better political and military leadership than it has. Two campaigns, Afghanistan and Iraq, and in both cases the people the coalition forces were out to capture or kill have got away and are free to foment discontent, to bring fear that they might return.

You're right, it would---and it would be similarly crass. The problem is we allow the politicians to direct our losses to their own advantage.

I keep saying this to you, and you never acknowledge it, but I don't hate America or Americans, and I'd like to think many people are of a similar mind; but we do dislike or fear what American is seen to stand for: where right wing, biblical utterings from a general is not seen as a warning but as an everyday event; where a president is willing to spill the last drop of other people's blood to win his election, sorry, campaign; and where, let's not forget, Muslims were being targeted for retribution after a bomb atrocity by both the military and the ordinary people, only for it to have been a US citizen, Timothy McVeigh, and friends who were responsible.

America is more a continent than a country, an area made up of many different views and peoples. Given the size of the country, it's hardly surprising that US citizens pay little attention to matters beyond their borders. But the isolationism of the early part of the last century is dangerous today. America is part of the world and must try to understand that the things important to people in Wisconsin are not the same as to those in Armenia or Uganda or Indonesia. And being a muscular Christian nation is as unacceptable to those countries as the fundamentalist government of Iran is to most western nations.

I still believe a good first step to mending fences with your enemies would be putting pressure on Israel to start behaving. But the fear of alienating Jewish voters in the US means that this won't happen.

Enough

You're obviously convinced that the world hates you and your fellow Americans, and no amount of reasoned argument will make you think otherwise. If it's any consolation, we hate our politicians too. But that's it. I've argued (and argued and argued), and will say no more to you on the subject. Carry on imagining all us forumites throwing darts at pictures of Uncle Sam, and sticking needles into dolls of George W Bush. It's not true, but don't let that stop you.
