It was originally a B-side, then appeared on the album Hatful of Hollow (a collection of B-sides, alternative versions, etc) and consequently became so popular it was released as an A-side.

I have to say that in my opinion they are the best band in the world and would challenge anyone to name 3 bands that have had more influence on popular music since the mid 90s than the Smiths
