The BEST Comedy is in the eye of the beholder
henceforth the stupid notion that 1 comedy stands head & shoulders above all else but being as this is a forum I nominate Arsenal in Europe
as the Comedy(in progress) of Year

In my opinion The Office is a classic and will become as famous in years to come to other classics like Fawlty Towers and Only Fools.

I think that practically anyone who has ever worked in an office can relate to some of the charachters in the show. And its good to see that Ricky Gervais has agreed to end the show on a high after the xmas specials, rather than milk it a little like Only Fools has.

I have just bought the full second series of the Office on DVD and it is one of the best comedies around.

Cheers

As famous as Fawlty Towers

I woudn't think so

Just to prove the point-never heard of Only Fools in Australia which is saying something as our ABC(sister to the BBC) buys almost any British content it can lay its hands on) but every man & his dog knows Fawlty Towers probably because its episodes have been shown every year since its inception

How right you are - deadeningly accurate in its depiction of office life, which is why I couldn't call it a classic. Yes, it captures it, brilliantly so, but for what? There's no real invention, just merciless observation, and far, far too mannered in scope and execution. It would be good to see what Peter Kay - a genius of invention - would make with this scenario. And that cod-docu style may date badly in time, in the way the stage-farce trappings of Fawlty Towers have. We shall see. Porridge & Steptoe get the gongs from me.
