Sorry, Giles. I know you're trying to be objective, but you don't seem to actually have a point to make, and you're in danger of skirting objectionable instead. Why are these empty & bogus? Are they empty & bogus for those directly involved? And their families? Their families' families? True, you don't see these sentiments just before a war because the reason for war is paramount at the time. They don't bring back the dead - rememberance is the issue here. And what's to be remembered by all of us - something the poppies & one minute silence do so effectively for people of all ages - is why we shouldn't ever let this sort of thing happen again.

As I said, it's about remembering the dead, not bringing them back. Of equal importance is remembering why they died - although that's of no importance if you've already decided it 'means nothing', of course.
