Yes, I did celebrate to a considerable degree after Franks goal. 4-0 was well deserved and my huge delight turned to sheer frustration after Arsenal bagged a goal in the 88th minute. I REALLY thought that was the bet won in NOVEMBER!!! Still, I imagine Janey was VERY relieved!

Geordies on sunday. Cannon Fodder springs to mind

The West London of my youth is now on dvd

I've met the man on the street............and he's a cunt

The number one reason that Soccer/Football hasn't taken off in countries like America & Australia is because it doesn't have that gladatorial aspect that Grid Iron,Basketball(non-contact my ass),Baseball,Ice Hockey, Aussie Rules,Rugby League,Rugby Union.

I liken it to watching chess when you compare it to these other sports
Tactics & skill are often over looked by the public who in reality are just a mass of blood thirsty barbarians

The only time it hits centre stage is The World Cup
When you consider how the BIG stars go down with what appears to be serious injures only to recover minutes later is it any wonder the public think soccer/football is played by BOYS/SISSIES and not MEN who put their bodies on the line

Then add the public squawking by coaches/managers about how unlucky their team was...blah blah blah

Soccer/Football had its chance in 1994
It has blown it big time IMHO
Will never be anything more than an amateur sport played by many
in Australia & The States

my god, you're right!

if only our not-so-brave boys had blubbed a little less and stayed on their feet a little longer... global domination was within footie's grasp but will now and forever remain a broken dream, trapped within a cultural matrix of sargassian circuity.

oh, well... off to the backwaters of europe, s.e. asia, africa, s. america... ;-)

When you consider Australia shows 6 hours of soccer/football every Sunday
from 12-00 - 6-00pm of all the world leagues is it any wonder people turn their backs on the local leagues which are akin to The UKs 3rd Nationwide
Division

Soccer is the most played sport in Australia up till the age of 16
then they just change sports because theie is no meaningful bridge from School Teams to Community Clubs who still cling to their ethnic origins to their detriment

A disgusting state of affairs by anybodies standards

sounds similar in that respect to the usa - i.e. a game for school kids and wimmin.

the reason footie has spread like a virus to all corners of the planet is that it is the most quintessentially democratic form of athletic self-expression. even the most dirt poor children can tie up a bundle of rags to kick between some piled up stones.

i suppose when you have the highly sophisticated, commercial sporting infrastructures that exist in australia/america and the consequent levels of investment needed to maintain them, the spontaneity factor is pretty much eliminated. i am a bit puzzled though, as to why footie never took hold in the early part of the last century, the way it did in less obviously connected - i.e. non northern european - cultures?

Maybe we can just put it down to the Colonies thumbing their noses
at the Empire in many instances

Like you say Soccer is the very poor mans game that requires no manufactured goods to play from the likes of reebok or nike

Before the advent of globalisation Australia had a growing & thriving Soccer competition.

Then the big money hit Europe and everybody went overseas, our coaching clinics & academies turned into cattle yards for agents to rape & pillage looking for their next dodgy payday....very sad allround

The World Game is tainted by corruption and will be for ever in a day IMHO
FIFA have proved that over & over. How Germany ended up with the 2006 World Cup is still beyond me...politics

While this perception exists it will suffer the same short term/possibly long term damage like the Baseball Strikes in America & the Rugby League TV Wars in Australia produced

National games that are unique to that country invariably will hold sway while the product on the park is good-cultural as you say-but if a foreign
sport starts with a good product and detiorates over time-it is doomed to mediocrity-Soccer in the US of A & Australia fits this category like a glove
The only time they get decent audiences is when the cream of the crop are on the pitch...ie world cup qualifiers...visiting big name teams with all their stars

cheers

Don't forget to mention they were playing at home againt one of the power house sides of the premiership

Tottenham

2 of the flukiest goals you will ever see

Very lucky when you consider the first goal(Another Henry f..ck up- 1 on 1 with the goaly with enough time to bake a cake) was saved by the keeper and the rebound put in the net by Pires

Followed up by a Lundberg shot deflected off a defender over the keeper

No conviction what so ever IMHO

Final score 2-1 to ARSENAL
