thinking of changing from a Freeserve 56k connection to a different ISP with a broadband connection.
Any recommendations for who's best to go with?
Freeserve are proper shite IMHO.

I was pretty satisfied with NTL but of course you have to be on the cable route.

All comes down to where you live and whats available
Just like computers they're all different
There are some articles at
if you search under Broadband which might be useful

Re: best ISPs?
I switched to Freeserve from AOL, oddly enough, and could barely tell the difference apart from Freeserve having a slightly better, nay excellent, customer service. Perhaps, as mentioned earlier, it's down to your computer.
As for broadband, I've seen Tiscali's advertised very cheaply and for some it could be tempting, but - be warned - their customer service is way beyond a joke.

Re: best ISPs?
Think its more than likely the new technology that adware/spyware are using
They infect your computer as you view pages now not after you've downloaded something as in the past
Disabling cookies is about the only safeguard so I'm told but of course this is a major inconcenience
Case in point...before I signed on this morning I ran adaware & spybot
Found nothing....signed on to 2 websites....viewed 7 pictures & 2 front pages....ran adaware & spybot again...found 9 adware/spyware programs
I'm sure eventually the techies on the good side will come up with something but in the mean time dialup times will plummet
cheers
